Ever heard of a bloke called Offa? King of Mercia, he instigated the building of a defensive dyke. 12 centuries later a long distance path was laid out, roughly following the line of Offa’s Dyke, and thirty years later still two friends set out to walk it.
How difficult could it be, walking from one end of Wales to the other? Loaded down with maps, guide books and global positioning systems they were soon to find out and only 5 minutes after leaving Chepstow were monumentally lost! Soon they were enjoying the scenery, watching the wildlife and overdosing on dried apricots. Staying in haunted English castles and heavenly Welsh guest houses they made their way north.

I should hate this book. I hate Facebook because it is full of inane wittering about mundane things and 'Walking with Offa' is from cover to cover a story of the mundane:stepping in sheep poo and the sulfur content of apricots are two major themes.

I only bought my kindle copy because I'd just finished reading a brief and fairly unsatisfactory history of King Offa and thought Julia Merrifield might be offering new insights, she does not. Julia seems to think there was a historical figure called King Arthur and that he lived happily (probably in a comfortable semi-detached castle) in the small Welsh town of Llangollen. She certainly does not question the somewhat improbable concept that the dyke was built as a barrier to keep the Welsh out of England (neither country existed at the time of Offa and the Mercians certainly did not have the manpower to defend a 177 mile ditch which occasionally looks designed to defend from the west and occasionally from the east but which never had any form of palisade).

So why did I end up liking this book so much? It is not because it would serve as some sort of travel guide, despite the detailed descriptions of the perils and pit-stops of the path and the even more detailed descriptions of hostels this would not be my first reference in planning a trip (more practical guide books do exist). I love this book because you just cannot help but love Julia and her friend Chris. As you can tell I now feel I am on first name terms with these two ladies whom I will never meet. The story is so intimate and free from any guile that I found myself smiling almost continuously as I read.

To describe the book as genteel is like describing the arctic as icy or the Sahara as sandy. I was transported from the complexity and competitiveness of the modern world to a new and far more pleasant place, a place where it is actually easy to believe in King Arthur and his knights and to even believe they would have been jolly nice chaps.
